Good day folks,
Today just wanted to write to give some inspiration to anyone on the fence about how to make money in this changing world with your own side hustle/service business.
As you probably know, running a service business is easily my favorite and most highly recommended way to make money especially if you’re not sure where to start or what to do.
A home service business allows you to quit your job making 10 bucks an hour, and start getting paid $100 an hour to do virtually the same tasks.
That’s pretty much exactly what I did when I was in my senior year of college, I had tried dropshipping, e-commerce, affiliate marketing, and had worked pretty much every type of job you can think of.
At the time, I was mowing lawns and doing yardwork for between $10-17 bucks an hour and some of those jobs were brutal! I remember working for the local elks lodge for 11 an hour manually digging out stumps with a pickaxe that I had bought because I had broken so many of their tools! It was hot outside and blisters were forming everywhere on my hands I was definitely close to a “fuck this” type of moment.
Fast forward a few months after another failed job working at an Ice Rink for 12.50 an hour and I had learned from a friend about this business he had pressure washing houses. I had never done this or knew anyone in my state who did but I figured I would give it a try.
I went out and purchased a small 2.5 gallon per minute Ryobi pressure washer with all the hoses and such for about $500 on my home depot credit card and got to work. I started knocking on doors in nearby neighborhoods and I got my first job cleaning a driveway a couple of miles up the street.
4 hours later I had earned my first $120 and I was hooked. That was more money than I had ever made that fast and I immediately went to the next house to find my next job. Now, I’ve told this story many times so I won’t go too in-depth here but basically, this was when Covid hit and the number of jobs I got severely decreased.
Quickly I had to figure out how to get more jobs and the answer I found was Facebook ads. This allowed me to stop going door to door and focus on growing my business by doing better work and learning how to do my jobs better.
I soon realized that my most profitable jobs weren’t driveways or even pressure washing. The best jobs in my area were cleaning gutters and getting moss off of roofs. The process I used to do the roofs isn’t important, the point is you absolutely must let your market tell you what jobs to do. It doesn’t matter what equipment you have or what jobs you like to do, that comes later.
First and foremost you need to start figuring out what jobs give you the most bang for your buck. It’s pretty simple and just based on numbers, for roofs, I was averaging $100 an hour while with driveways and such I was averaging $50 an hour.
That being said, roofs are more money for a reason. It can be dangerous if you’re not careful and some people aren’t good at them. In 2 years though I have yet to have any serious falls the only one being a ladder slip while I was 4 feet off the ground that ended up with a scraped hand.
For some people like my buddy Jon, he has figured the numbers out for mowing lawns and he quickly hired people to do it and earns at least $100 an hour for having a recurring revenue system where he gets paid every month to mow a lawn he just did last month. It can take as little as 15 minutes and he’s done.
If you don’t have any life-changing skills like a computer science degree or you have an electrician’s license then starting your own cleaning business/home service business is the way to go. The amount of fast money you can make is insane, and it doesn’t have to be your end all be all. Cleaning is just the beginning. Once you have money, you can start to buy back your time including assets that can bring you money every month like clockwork.
It all starts from making that first green dollar. If you can make one you can make 2 and if you can make 2 you can make a million.
